It’s already June and summer is calling! If you’re someone who customizes your own clothes to give them a unique, personal touch, today we’re going to share some very easy, quick, and inexpensive ways to customize shorts so they look much more beautiful. The good news is that these ideas will also inspire you for many other garments and accessories. They’re so simple that you can make them not only with a sewing machine, but also with fabric glue.
Are you ready? Let’s get to them!
Super-easy ideas for customizing shorts
1. A little lace
This couldn’t be easier: buy some lace—or recycle it from an old garment you no longer wear—and try it in different places on the shorts. Where do you like it best? Where does it look better? You can place it directly on the fabric, although we’ve seen that some girls also cut a piece of denim and place the lace in its place. Glue it on or add a few stitches. Both ways look lovely: we saw the ones in the photo at Best Look Zone.
2. With fringe and going wild
If you saw the bohemian bag tutorial, you probably fell in love with these adorable fringes just like we did. Remember that in our shop you can find them in ecru like the ones in the photo, or in colors, depending on the effect you want. Sew or glue the fringe in strategic places to customize shorts: the legs, pockets, waistband… As in the previous example, try things out first and see what looks best.
3. Recycle an old T-shirt
Often, all it takes to give a garment new life is to combine it with another one you already have and don’t use. But not in the way you might imagine: in this case, for one to bring the other back to life, the first one has to “die.” Just look at how beautiful this idea from Sausage Jar can be. If you don’t have an old T-shirt to cut up, use scraps left over from a sewing project or buy a remnant of a fabric you like in our fabric section.
4. You can never have too many buttons
Are you one of those people who keeps accumulating a little pile of buttons in some tin box? Then it’s time to put them to use. In this case, we couldn’t find a photo showing this idea with shorts, so we’ll explain it using a bag. You can use regular buttons or cover buttons with pretty fabrics—do you know about the button-covering tool yet?—cover the entire surface or make designs with them… Try different options and choose the one you like best.
5. Pocket art
Another thing many girls do is customize shorts by decorating only the back pockets. It takes a moment and no effort at all: you just have to cut two pieces of fabric using the pockets of your shorts as a pattern. And then, you know what to do: sew or glue. Some people make bows instead of using a flat piece of fabric. They’re also very cute, but they might be a little uncomfortable to sit on.
