When we talk about necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets… what do you think of? Gold? Silver? Precious stones? In today’s post, we’re going to show you that jewelry has also undergone a revolution thanks to DIY and crafting. We’re bringing you three inspiring, beautiful ideas so you can start designing jewelry from fabric, T-shirt yarn, snaps, and other materials that will radically change the look of your jewelry box. You only have to take a look around the web to see the incredible, wonderful variety of different necklace designs and styles you can make using T-shirt yarn. You already know that another way to get strips of T-shirt yarn is to cut up your old T-shirts that you no longer wear, but this way you’ll have to invest much more time, which isn’t necessarily a problem if you have it to spare. Knots, braids, combinations with chains, purse handles, or metal rings… There are a million possibilities, plus all the ones you can still invent yourself!
To inspire you, we’re showing you a couple of designs that we loved for their simplicity, how incredibly easy they are to make, and the beautiful result. For these two designs, all you need is a metal ring in whatever size you want for the first one and a simple chain for the second. Then, you only have to tie the strips of T-shirt yarn and decorate the hanging ends to your liking with beads or more knots.

A great discovery we made through the button-covering tool, which you can find for sale in our store and which we show you how to use in this tutorial, is rings with snaps. As you can imagine, they’re extremely easy and inexpensive to make, and you can create personalized rings using the scraps of fabric left over after making a garment, then pair them with that garment or anything else.
Using the same tool, you can also make other accessories, such as hair clips or clothing badges. It’s a wonderful way to recycle tiny pieces of fabric that you thought you couldn’t use in any other way. Or hadn’t you realized yet that when it comes to DIY, anything goes? Remember, nothing gets thrown away here!
Bracelets and bangles with fabric, crochet, and T-shirt yarn.
Another accessory with infinite possibilities is bracelets and bangles. You can make them with practically anything, as simple or as complicated as your skills or your time allow. Since you’ve already seen our tutorial for making T-shirt yarn bracelets and our suggestion for making burlap bangles, we’ll leave you with some equally inspiring designs for you to adapt to your taste and according to what you like best or do best.
For the closure, you can use Velcro, buttons, snaps, carabiners, or simply a knot, depending on the type of bracelet you make. As a striking and unusual example, we’re showing you this one we found on scrapgirl.typepad.com, because it also gives you the opportunity to recycle small pieces of fabric that seem impossible to use for anything else. You only have to cut and fray the strips of fabric into three sections (but not all the way to the end), braid them, sew them to the carabiner, and look at the result.
You can also give them a more personal touch with beads and charms like the ones used to make necklaces.
