In the previous post, we showed you how to make a hat by recycling a sweater and, in case you wanted to add a fun touch, we also showed you how to make a wool pom-pom with your own hands. This gave us lots of ideas for decorating, adding them to all kinds of garments and accessories, and making different pom-pom crafts with them. We started researching and found lots of really cool things you can make with just one ball of yarn and not much else.
These pom-pom crafts are super easy and adorable, and they’re ideal activities to do in a group or with little ones. But first, we’re going to give you a couple more techniques for making pom-poms in different sizes.
HOW TO MAKE WOOL POM-POMS:
Using your hands/fingers as a spool.
This is the technique we showed you before, which you can see in the previous post. All you need is your hands and a pair of scissors, and it allows you to make pom-poms in different sizes. If you want smaller ones, wrap the yarn around two fingers, and add more fingers to make them larger.
How to make pom-poms in batches.
With cardboard disks.
You can also make your own “pom-pom makers” using just cardboard and scissors. You can see the whole process in under three minutes in this easy, quick video for making pom-poms.

If you want to make a lot of pom-poms, the hand or disk techniques are too slow. In this case, we found a very, very clever technique on a Polish blog full of ideas and pom-poms. As you can see, you don’t need to know Polish to understand the process in the photographs perfectly.
POM-POM CRAFTS:
Pom-pom figures.
So adorable, fluffy and soft. You can make all kinds of figures depending on your imagination, creativity and skills. Start with the simplest single-pom-pom figures, to which you can glue felt accessories to bring them to life (ears, eyes, wings, feet… whatever comes to mind), or try making figures with layered pom-poms in different sizes, like these adorable bunnies from Ikatbag.com.
Pom-pom garlands.
You know us—we can never have too many garlands! In all kinds of shapes and fabrics, with leaves, flowers, paper… And now pom-poms, too. This idea from Best Birthdays consists specifically of a giant pom-pom garland for which they use one entire skein of yarn per pom-pom. Of course, you can also make them smaller and decorate all kinds of things with them: cribs, headboards, frames, doors… Pom-poms everywhere!
Pom-pom rug.
Another adorable idea to give your feet or your little ones’ feet a soft, cozy place they won’t want to leave. For this rug, the technique for making pom-poms in batches will be perfect, because you’ll need a lot of them. Mix different colors and sizes for a much prettier result. To make it, you’ll need a nonslip rug backing, which you can find at any home or hardware store. You simply distribute and tie the pom-poms onto the mesh structure. A beautiful idea from Say Yes.
Here we’re showing you just three of the most original and fun ideas we’ve seen, but there are lots of great ideas for using pom-poms in all kinds of creative ways: as bookmarks, to decorate cushions and pillows, to make decorative “flowers” by adding a stick to the pom-poms, glued onto cardboard or wooden letters, to make “curtains,” to decorate gifts…
