Last week we told you all about our beginner sewing machine classes, both online and in person. One of our readers confessed that the Three Kings had brought her a serger. The funny thing is that at first, you don’t know whether that means it’s a reward for being good or a punishment for being bad. We’re here to clear that up! It’s because you’ve been good, even if it feels a little overwhelming. Here we come to the rescue with our classes for learning to use a serger.
Maybe it looks so complicated that you wonder whether it’s worth it, and we have the answer to that question too. Of course it is! Once you get the hang of it, the serger will let you achieve professional finishes. It will also save you time and work. Sounds good, right?
If you’d like to know more, we recommend reading this post about Sewing with a serger to help you make up your mind.
Classes for learning to use a sergerin person and online
As we always say, facing a complicated task on your own isn’t the same as doing it with someone who can help you. Exploring the fascinating world of the serger with us will keep you from getting frustrated and sending it flying after the first attempt. The good news is that it’s easier than it looks: you just need a little push. And that’s what we’re here to give you.
Introduction to the serger classes in Mataró
Do you have it sitting in front of you and not know what to do with it? Are you afraid to touch anything? Does it feel like the instructions are written in Chinese? Don’t panic! Bring your serger and some spools of thread to one of our in-person introductory classes in Mataró. We usually organize a class every month, so you can already set aside February 11. This one will be just for you and your serger.
You’ll learn how to thread it, adjust the tension, distance, needles, differential feed, and threads, as well as how to clean and maintain it… In short, everything you need to get started. A completely hands-on class where we’ll be working with the machine in front of us the entire time. Of course, we won’t just look inside it—we’ll turn it on and see what we’re capable of doing with it.
Find all the information here about schedules and prices, and sign up now—the maximum capacity is only 6 people.
Online serger introduction class
If you’re not from Mataró or the surrounding area, we understand that attending the in-person class may be inconvenient. That’s precisely why we created an online class where you can learn the same things without leaving home. Since it’s a video class, you’ll be able to see everything we do very clearly, repeat it as many times as you want, go back, freeze the image… Until you can do it just like us!
In this class you’ll learn:
- Turning it on, turning it off, and getting started.
- How to thread it and prepare the threads.
- How to adjust the tension correctly.
- How to change the threads without having to rethread it.
- Stitch length, seam width, and the function of the differential feed.
- How to change the needles and presser foot.
- How to sew with three threads (instead of four).
- Basic maintenance: cleaning and oiling.
- First stitches and when to cut the thread.
- Possible problems when sewing knit (stretchy) fabric.
- Little tips and cheat sheets ;)
To watch the serger introduction tutorial you have to join Lulu Ferris. Which, by the way, is wonderful, even if it’s awkward for us to say so. For $10 USD per month, you can enjoy all the tutorials and, in addition, we upload a new one every week.
Choose the class format that suits you best and give yourself the chance to learn how to use a serger: you both deserve it!
