After talking so much about spring, it seems summer got jealous and decided to arrive early. The heat has started shattering thermometers ahead of schedule, so today we’re bringing you a roundup post with six DIY beach ideas so you can enjoy the sun without worrying about a thing.
The most important thing is to protect yourself from the sun properly. For that, you’ll need sunscreen with a protection factor suited to your skin tone and something to cover your head. We’re suggesting several options:
1. Customized hat: Do you have one of those straw hats at home that are usually handed out as advertising? They normally come with a band displaying a brand name. If you unstitch or remove that band and replace it with something pretty, you’ll have a unique, personalized hat. You can sew on or attach with safety pins some fabric flowers, a braid made from T-shirt yarn, or a pretty fabric ribbon.
2. Hairband: If you’re not going to spend very long in the sun and you just want something to keep your hair away from your face so it doesn’t bother you or leave marks, you can make yourself a hairband, too. Choose the fabric you like best and follow the steps we explain in this very simple tutorial. You’ll have it ready in no time.
Especially if you’re going to be on the coast and spending time at the beach, sand will be your worst enemy. You already know it gets everywhere, and somehow, even when you’ve been careful, all your things end up coated like a croquette. To solve that problem, we also have several multipurpose ideas you’re going to love:
3. Passport cover: Although we originally designed this simple project as a passport cover, the truth is that you can use it for whatever you like. For example, I use mine to keep a small mirror and a folding brush on one side and a pack of tissues on the other. You can also add a closure if you want, using a strip of fabric and Velcro or a button, or by sewing on a long strip of T-shirt yarn to wrap around it a few times and tie a knot… It’s up to you—this is DIY! Here we explain how to make it.
4. Pouch: After all, nothing protects against sand better than a zipper. You can make a pouch like this one in whatever size you want, to keep inside everything you want to protect: your cell phone, your wallet with your credit cards… It will also help you keep your beach bag better organized and your important things easy to find. We explain how to make it in this video.
5. Tote bag: The towel, a spare bikini, your glasses case, keys, wallet, water bottle, sunscreen… You’re going to need something big enough to carry it all, right? Our suggestion is a tote bag like this one. It’s also very easy to make, as you’ll see in the tutorial, very pretty, and completely customizable.
6. Customized flip-flops: Finally, remember that a few weeks ago we published a post showing you several ways to customize your flip-flops. It wouldn’t hurt to take a look if you haven’t seen it yet.
Et voilà! You’re all set to enjoy this early summer before it changes its mind and runs away!
And remember that everything in excess is bad, including the sun. Enjoy it in moderation and take care of your skin and the skin of those you love.
Happy tanning!
