What you’ll make
Sew an adjustable dog collar with patterned fabric over polypropylene webbing, a click buckle for fastening, and a ring for attaching a leash.
The fabric adds color, while the slider lets you adjust the collar for the individual dog.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Measure the dog’s neck and allow room for adjustment.
- Press a fabric strip to fit neatly over the webbing.
- Finish the webbing ends to reduce fraying.
- Edgestitch or zigzag the fabric onto the webbing.
- Thread the buckle, slider, and leash ring correctly.
- Reinforce the folded connection points.
Fabric and materials
You will need fabric, polypropylene webbing, a matching click buckle, an adjustment slider, and a leash ring. The sample uses 3 cm webbing and matching hardware.
Washable fabric glue can hold the folded fabric before stitching. A walking foot can help when sewing across the thicker folded areas.
Make it your own
Choose a print or solid fabric, then use matching or contrasting thread. A decorative zigzag can become part of the design, especially on plain fabric.

Sizing and fit
Measure around the dog’s neck before cutting and include enough additional webbing for the slider to tighten and loosen the collar.
The class uses a 70 cm strip for a dog with an approximately 45 cm neck. Recalculate the adjustment range and fabric-strip length for your dog.
