What you’ll make

Sew relaxed elastic-waist trousers with broad gathered tiers that create a flowing silhouette for spring and summer.

The full-length Algarve uses two gathered tiers on each leg. A cropped version can be made with one tier, and the side-seam pockets are optional.

The elastic waistband provides a comfortable pull-on fit, while lightweight fabric gives the tiers their characteristic movement.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize the curved crotch edges before assembly.
  • Construct optional side-seam pockets.
  • Gather the trouser waist evenly to fit the waistband.
  • Make an elastic casing and insert the elastic without twisting it.
  • Gather each tier to fit the section above it.
  • Align the tier seams while closing the inseams.
  • Finish the hems with a straight or twin-needle stitch.

Fabric choices

Choose a lightweight fabric with fluid movement, such as viscose or a light linen-viscose blend. Although a knit is possible, the class recommends a lightweight woven.

Avoid heavy denim and similarly weighty fabrics. The design uses substantial yardage, so a heavy cloth can pull against the elastic waistband and reduce the tiers’ movement.

Make it your own

  • Use two tiers for full-length trousers or one for a cropped version.
  • Add or omit the side-seam pockets.
  • Add patch pockets to the back if preferred.
  • Combine colors or prints across the tiers to use larger remnants.
  • Distribute length changes between both tiers to keep their proportions balanced.

Pattern sizes

The pattern includes sizes 34/36 through 54/56, covering waists from 64 to 110 cm and hips from 90 to 136 cm.

Finished trouser lengths range from 101 to 111 cm, depending on size. The class also explains where to add or remove length while keeping the tiers balanced.

The class includes a step-by-step video and downloadable A4 and A0 patterns with the size chart and fabric requirements.
