In this sewing tutorial, I’ll show you step by step how to sew this beautiful bag we’ve named Allison. Even if you’ve only recently started sewing, you’ll have no trouble making it.

What you’ll make

Sew the Allison, a drawstring crossbody bag that can also be carried by its two short handles.

Inside, a center divider separates the main space into two sections. A smaller patch pocket keeps a phone, keys, or another small item within easy reach.

The contrasting upper section forms a cord casing. Tightening the cord gathers the opening to help keep the contents contained.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Finish woven edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.
  • Sew the upper section as a drawstring casing.
  • Make a patch pocket and double-layer divider.
  • Shape the base and align the divider.
  • Attach short handles and reinforced ring tabs.
  • Assemble an adjustable crossbody strap.

Fabric and supplies

The demonstrated bag uses canvas for the main body and lighter cotton for the upper section. Add interfacing when a fine fabric needs more body.

The handles may be made from webbing, cotton tape, or faux leather. You will also need cord, rings, and a strap slider for the crossbody option.

Make it your own

Choose the large or small version, combine contrasting fabrics, or resize, reposition, or omit the small interior pocket.

Finish the drawstring with cord ends, beads, a cord lock, or simple knots. Optional swivel hooks can make the long strap removable.

Two pattern sizes

The PDF provides separate cutting measurements for large and small Allison bags.

The video class includes a downloadable PDF with cutting measurements, material guidance, and both bag sizes.
