What you’ll make
Sew a generous lined tote for the beach, pool, everyday errands, sewing projects or fabric shopping.
The Amalfi Tote has integrated shoulder handles, a shaped base and pleats that add volume and texture. Its approximate finished size is 68 cm wide, 46 cm high and 18 cm deep.
An interior pocket keeps smaller belongings accessible, while a short strap with a swivel clasp gives you a dedicated place for keys.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Shape the exterior and lining with correctly directed pleats.
- Prepare and attach an interior patch pocket.
- Insert the shaped base into the exterior and lining.
- Join the lining and outer bag with bias-bound edges.
- Construct and interface the integrated handles.
- Add and reinforce a key strap and your chosen closure.
Fabric choices
The sample uses cotton for both the exterior and lining, creating a softer bag. Canvas, waterproof canvas, denim and faux leather are also discussed.
Interfacing can add body, but very thick or rigid layers may be harder to manage at the pleats. The class also explains how fabric choice affects needle selection.
Make it your own
- Choose a hand-sewn magnetic button, a snap, fabric ties or no closure.
- Use one pocket, add a second or stitch divisions for specific belongings.
- Make matching bias strips or use coordinating premade bias tape.
- Add a suitable stabilizer for a firmer base.
- Interface the body for a more structured silhouette.
- Try quilted muslin for an unlined version with neatly finished exposed seams.
Finished size
The finished tote measures approximately 68 × 46 × 18 cm. Its broad body and deep base provide substantial capacity while remaining comfortable to carry on the shoulder.
The class includes a step-by-step video and a downloadable A4 pattern with material and fabric requirements.
