What you’ll make
Aran is a roomy, long-sleeved baby bodysuit in woven fabric, shaped with front and back yokes and finished with elastic at the cuffs and leg openings.
The decorative version has a gathered ruffle edged with lace. A back closure opens the neckline, while snaps at the crotch provide access for diaper changes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Identify and stabilize the yoke, placket and curved pieces before assembly.
- Add lace to the ruffle, shape its corners and distribute its gathers around the yokes and armholes.
- Form the overlapping back closure for buttons or snaps.
- Join the body sections to the yokes and set in the sleeves.
- Make elastic channels at the cuffs and legs, including an open method for small openings.
- Finish the neckline with folded binding and attach the crotch plackets.
- Complete the bodysuit with the selected back fastenings and crotch snaps.
Fabric choices
Aran is intended for woven fabric. Cotton, poplin, lightweight denim, fine needlecord, flannel and piqué are supported options, with gingham used for the class sample.
Avoid heavy denim because layered areas can become bulky. Lighter fabric also makes the gathered ruffle easier to shape.
Make it your own
Make the full lace-edged ruffle, omit only the lace or leave off both decorative elements for a simpler bodysuit.
The class also supports short sleeves, cuffs without elastic and a plain front without the separate yoke when the joining seam allowances are removed from the affected pieces.
Use buttons or snaps at the back. The crotch is finished with snaps.
Sizing
Sizes cover 0/3 through 18/24 months and heights from 62 to 86 cm. The chart spans chest measurements of 46–54 cm, waists of 46–52 cm and hips of 48–56 cm.
