What you’ll make
Sew the Austin, a relaxed unisex zip-up hoodie with a hood, two front kangaroo-style pockets, ribbed cuffs and hem, and optional contrast panels through the body and sleeves.
The front closes with a separating zipper. The hood can hold a drawstring through metal eyelets or stitched buttonholes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Adapt the pattern to include or omit the panels.
- Stabilize the stretch-fabric zipper edges.
- Set hood eyelets with interfacing for support.
- Finish and attach the two front pockets.
- Align body and sleeve panels at their notches.
- Install a separating zipper at matching seam points.
- Stretch and attach rib-knit cuffs and the hem band.
Fabric and notions
Use sweatshirt fabric such as French terry, fleece-backed sweatshirt knit, or another warm knit. Rib knit or cuffing is used at the sleeves and hem.
You will also need a separating zipper. Stabilizing tape or lightweight interfacing helps prevent wavy zipper edges.
Make it your own
Use contrast colors or prints in the body and sleeve panels, or combine the paper pattern pieces as demonstrated to cut the hoodie without panels.
Add eyelets or buttonholes and thread the hood with cord, ribbon, or a drawstring. Finish the ends with knots or decorative end caps, or omit the drawstring entirely.
Sizing
The included pattern covers sizes 34–56 and is supplied in home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 formats.
The class includes the graded hoodie patterns and a separate demonstration for preparing the panel-free version.
