What you’ll make

Sew an adjustable cover that sits over a baby in a carrier, providing warmth and protection from wet weather.

The cover has a hood, a large hand-warmer pocket, a separate zippered pocket, adjustable elasticated edges, and snap-fastened tabs for the carrier straps.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Sew and reinforce the hand-warmer pocket openings.
  • Add a separate side pocket with a zipper.
  • Construct the hood and add optional fabric ears.
  • Create channels for elastic cord and add cord locks.
  • Build snap-fastened tabs that wrap around the carrier straps.
  • Manage thick fabric layers and test the machine setup.

Fabric choices

The demonstrated softshell has a waterproof outer face and a warm, fleece-like inside. Its thickness creates bulky areas, so test five or six layers before starting the project.

Warm fleece is suggested as an easier-to-feed alternative. Choose a needle suited to the fabric and the thickness of the layers.

Make it your own

Leave off the hood’s decorative ears for a simpler version. Adjust the hood and side edges with elastic cord and cord locks, and place the zippered pocket on your preferred side.

Position the hand-warmer pocket higher or lower to suit the person using the carrier cover.

This easy project includes the video class and a downloadable PDF pattern for the carrier cover.
