What you’ll make
Create a fabric-covered foam Christmas tree with colorful removable ornaments that babies and toddlers can take off and place back on the tree.
The padded ornaments attach with stitched hook-and-loop patches, turning the tree into both a decorative object and an interactive fabric toy.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew the main fabric cover for a foam cone.
- Add an overlapping stretch-fabric base.
- Position and stitch hook-and-loop patches securely.
- Sew, clip, turn, and finish shaped ornaments.
- Create fusible appliqués with zigzag stitching.
- Add antlers, textile-marker details, and trim.
Fabric and materials
Use main fabric for the cone, knit fabric for the base, a foam cone, hook-and-loop tape, batting, fusible web, and assorted fabric scraps.
Ricrac, pom-pom trim, cord, and permanent textile markers can add details. The adhesive hook-and-loop tape is also stitched in place.
Make it your own
The included designs are a star, reindeer, stocking, candy cane, and round ornament. Repeat favorites or vary their colors, appliqués, faces, and trims.
Add a cord loop while sewing an ornament if you also want to hang it on a full-size Christmas tree.
Sizing and structure
The demonstration uses a 14 x 37 cm foam cone. The downloadable pattern supplies the matching cone-cover and overlapping base pieces.
