What you’ll make
Sew a beach umbrella cover with a drawstring top, an adjustable carrying strap, decorative trim, and a useful exterior pocket.
The pocket is designed for the tool used to make a hole for the umbrella pole in the sand, keeping it separate from the folded umbrella. It can also hold other small beach items.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare an exterior pocket and closure strap.
- Install a snap or adapt the pocket for a button.
- Baste decorative trim into the shaped seam.
- Position and reinforce backpack webbing.
- Join and finish the cover’s main pieces.
- Sew a top casing and insert the drawstring.
- Add a slider to adjust the carrying strap.
Fabric and supplies
Canvas gives the long cover useful durability and structure. The demonstrated version also uses backpack webbing, a slider and ring, cord, a snap, and fringe.
Interfacing reinforces the pocket and closure strap. Finish fabric that frays with an overlock stitch, zigzag, or another suitable overcasting stitch.
Make it your own
Replace the fringe with pom-pom trim or another decorative edging, or omit the trim for a simpler cover.
Close the pocket with a snap or a button and buttonhole. Compare your folded umbrella with the pattern before cutting to confirm that the cover provides enough room.
This easy class combines a large, simple cover with useful details: a separate pocket, adjustable carrying strap, drawstring closure, and optional decorative trim.
