What you’ll make
Sew an open-front bohemian vest finished with braided cord around the neckline and armholes, plus a band of fringe along the hem.
The relaxed, sleeveless layer is designed to be worn open. Its decorative trim gives a simple woven vest a distinctive boho finish without adding a closure.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the back on the fold and prepare mirrored fronts.
- Join the shoulders and finish the open front edge.
- Attach braided cord evenly around curved edges.
- Finish bulky armholes before sewing the side seams.
- Use a regular machine where thick trim challenges a serger.
- Finish the fringe ends and secure both edges of the trim.
Fabric and supplies
The sample uses a printed woven fabric with cream fringe and braided cord. Water-soluble fabric glue can hold the trim temporarily, although pins may be used instead.
The instructor also discusses knit, faux leather, and leather alternatives whose raw edges may need different finishing.
Make it your own
Use a well-fitting T-shirt as a reference when widening the back for more ease. Add width at the front edges if you want them to meet more closely across the body.
Change the fabric, cord, and fringe colors for a subtler or more contrasting finish.
