What you’ll make
Sew the Cannes Dress, a fitted-waist style with a square neckline, button front and shaping in both the bodice and skirt.
The design has short puff sleeves with gathered details and ties. Choose an ankle-length or above-the-knee skirt, with large in-seam pockets if desired.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges.
- Shape the fitted bodice with darts and panel seams.
- Bind and gather the sleeve openings.
- Set gathered sleeve caps into the armholes.
- Sew inverted skirt darts and in-seam pockets.
- Join the bodice and skirt while matching key seams.
- Finish the button bands, hem, buttonholes and buttons.
Choosing your fabric
Use a woven fabric without stretch. The class versions use lightweight denim or chambray and embroidered gingham-style cotton.
Linen or another fabric with body creates a fuller, more structured silhouette. A finer fabric such as viscose gives the skirt more drape and movement.
Make it your own
Choose the long or short skirt and decide whether to include the pockets. Try the dress on before hemming if you want to adjust the final length.
You can also sew only the bodice to make a square-neck, button-front blouse.
Pattern sizing
The pattern covers sizes 34–56. Its body chart spans an 86–134 cm bust, 64–112 cm waist and 90–138 cm hips.
The listed dress length ranges from 131 cm in size 34 to 142 cm in size 56.
This intermediate class breaks an elaborate, multi-piece dress into manageable stages and includes printable A4 and copy-shop A0 pattern files.
