What you’ll make
The Carlota is a lightweight baby and toddler romper with an open back, adjustable shoulder straps and optional patch pockets on the seat.
Elastic shapes the back waist and leg openings. Snaps at the crotch let the romper open for diaper changes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Identify pieces cut on the fold or as mirrored pairs.
- Sew narrow straps with directional prints.
- Reinforce lightweight fabric at the snap areas.
- Prepare and position optional patch pockets.
- Create elastic casings at the legs and back waist.
- Finish the crotch snap plackets.
- Join the upper and lower sections.
Fabric choices
The sample uses lightweight woven poplin. Other supported woven options include lightweight denim, chambray and linen.
You can also use knit fabric. Choose a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle and a stitch suited to knits.
Make it your own
- Leave off the back patch pockets.
- Use contrasting fabric for the bodice lining and strap undersides.
- Replace the shoulder snaps with buttons and buttonholes.
- Add a second strap snap position for more adjustment.
Sizing
The included pattern covers sizes 0/3 months through 24/36 months.
