What you’ll make

Sew a padded, hanging Christmas tree that doubles as a reusable chalkboard gift list. Its divided lower pocket keeps chalk and an erasing cloth or sponge close at hand.

The demonstrated tree has contrasting front and back fabrics, a hanging cord and pom-pom trim around the outline. Beyond the holidays, it can hold reminders or a grocery list.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Interface, hem and attach a divided pocket.
  • Position chalkboard fabric without piercing it with pins.
  • Use water-soluble fabric glue for temporary hold.
  • Edge-stitch the chalkboard panel with a zigzag.
  • Baste pom-pom trim around angled edges.
  • Assemble, turn and close the padded tree.

Materials

The project combines front and back fabrics with batting, chalkboard fabric and fusible interfacing for the pocket. Cord hangs the tree and keeps the chalk attached.

Pom-pom trim is optional. Leaving it off simplifies the outline while preserving the chalkboard, pocket and hanging features.

Make it your own

Choose contrasting fabrics for the two sides or coordinate the tree with other holiday decorations. The class also suggests adding appliqué motifs from related Christmas projects.

Adjust the pocket position, divide it into compartments, use contrasting thread around the chalkboard or add trim along the lower opening.

Verified pattern details

The material guide specifies a chalkboard panel approximately A4 size, 21 x 29.7 cm. The pocket starts from a fabric piece measuring 19 cm wide by 8 cm high.

The video class includes a downloadable A4 pattern and material guide.
