What you’ll make

Sew a round Christmas tree skirt sized for your tree, with a center opening and a closure that helps it fit neatly around the trunk.

The samples are padded and quilted with lines radiating from the center. Fringe adds a festive finish, but the quilting and trim are optional.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Draft a quarter circle to your chosen diameter.
  • Size and position the center opening.
  • Allow for quilting take-up when cutting.
  • Stabilize curved woven edges.
  • Layer fabric and batting for quilting.
  • Add trim and your chosen closure.
  • Turn and finish the opening neatly.

Fabric options

The class uses velvet and poplin. Canvas and fine-wale corduroy are also suitable, and you can combine coordinating fabrics on the two sides.

Batting gives the skirt its padded look. If your fabric has a directional print, plan where the front and opening will sit before cutting.

Make it your own

Quilt radiating lines, diamonds, squares, free-motion designs, or lines that follow the print. You can also leave the skirt unquilted.

Add fringe, pom-pom trim, or no trim. Close the opening with ties, buttons, or snaps. A ties-only version can be made reversible.

Complete your holiday décor with the 3D XMAS Letters, Rudolph Apron, or Easy Advent Calendar.

Choose your diameter

The sample has a 70 cm diameter for a smaller tree. The drafting technique lets you choose a different diameter and adjust the center opening to suit your tree.

Follow the project from custom sizing through quilting, trim and closure choices, assembly, turning, and the final opening finish.
