Cork Fabric Clutch with a Detachable Wrist Strap

What you’ll make
Sew a lined clutch that combines cork fabric with a contrasting textile panel. A zipper closes the bag, folded sides create its shape, and a detachable wrist strap clips onto a side ring.
The finished clutch holds essentials such as a wallet, phone, keys, and makeup while keeping the exterior clean and compact.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Handle and sew flexible, nonfraying cork fabric.
- Fuse interfacing while protecting the iron and pressing surface.
- Install a zipper between the exterior and lining.
- Topstitch so the lining stays clear of the zipper teeth.
- Fold and close the sides to form the clutch.
- Reduce bulk at cork corners before turning.
- Make a cork wrist strap with a ring and swivel clasp.
Fabric and hardware
The sample combines cork, printed exterior fabric, lining, and fusible interfacing. Because cork does not fray, its applied corner pieces can be secured with straight stitching or zigzag.
You’ll also need a zipper, ring, and swivel clasp. Water-soluble fabric glue, clips, or basting can control the layers without adding unnecessary pinholes to the cork.
Make it your own
Make the clutch entirely from fabric, entirely from cork, or combine the two as shown. Add a ring at the other end and attach a chain or long strap to convert it into a crossbody bag.
