What you’ll make
Create an enclosed cave-style bed for a cat or small dog, with a round front opening and playful ears at the top.
A stabilized outer shell helps the cave remain upright without becoming excessively rigid. The separate stuffed cushion lifts out for easier cleaning.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Fuse or baste stabilizer to the outer fabric.
- Build and attach the dimensional ears.
- Join the curved front, back and base pieces.
- Manage bulky layers as the cave takes shape.
- Secure the lining so it does not sag.
- Turn and neatly close the assembled cave.
- Sew, stuff and finish the removable cushion.
Fabric and support
The sample uses warm sherpa on both sides. Canvas can make the exterior easier to handle, while cooler fabrics are an option for a year-round bed.
The class uses firm 3.5 mm fusible stabilizer to support the cave. Batting alone is not recommended as the main support because it may not keep the roof upright.
Sherpa on both sides plus stabilizer creates bulky seams. A walking or roller foot, a size 100 jeans needle and slow stitching helped manage the sample.
Make it your own
- Choose warm sherpa or cooler fabrics.
- Move the decorative ears if preferred.
- Topstitch the entrance to control a rolling lining.
- Fill the cushion to the desired firmness.
Finished size
The finished bed measures approximately 40 cm wide, 35 cm high and 40 cm deep. It is designed for cats and small dogs.
