What you’ll make

Sew soft, reversible knit booties for a baby who is not yet walking. Two fabrics create a different look on each side.

The soleless construction is flexible and comfortable, more like a warm sock than outdoor footwear. It does not insulate a baby’s feet from a cold floor.

A folded ankle section holds the bootie around the foot without a stiff shoe structure.

What you’ll learn in this class

Choose knit with enough stretch for the opening.
Follow the marked grain direction.
Cut the paired upper, ankle, and sole pieces.
Mark quarter points on curved pieces.
Join the ankle, upper, and sole without puckers.
Handle several knit layers at the machine.
Turn and close the bootie invisibly.

Fabric and materials

These booties require knit fabric because the ankle opening must stretch over the baby’s foot. The sample combines two soft coordinating knits to emphasize the reversible design.

Use a ballpoint, jersey, or stretch needle suited to the fabric. A walking foot can help feed the layers, and a serger may be used for selected seams.

Make it your own

Pair prints, solids, or coordinating colors to create two wearable sides. If you plan to use both sides, close the turning opening with an invisible stitch.

If the booties will always be worn on one side, the opening can instead be closed by machine where the stitching will remain inside.

Baby sizing

The pattern covers sizes from 0–3 months through 9–12 months. Select the appropriate size before cutting the paired pieces.

These soft booties are intended for babies who are not yet walking and do not have a structured outdoor sole.
