What you’ll make
Sew a wearable dinosaur or dragon tail with a stuffed crest, an adjustable hook-and-loop waistband, and a zippered outer cover.
A separate stuffed insert slips inside, allowing the cover to be removed for washing after everyday adventures.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the tail, waistband, end panel, and mirrored crest pieces.
- Sew, turn, and lightly stuff the curved crest.
- Add fusible-appliqué spots with zigzag stitching.
- Install the zipper and finish woven fabric edges.
- Match alignment marks when assembling the tail.
- Make the removable insert and adjustable closure.
Fabric and materials
Woven and knit fabrics both work for the tail. The project also uses batting, stuffing, a zipper, hook-and-loop tape, and fusible web for optional appliqués.
Make it your own
Decorate the tail with circles, triangles, stars, or free-form spots. Vary the crest and appliqué colors, or omit the spots for a simpler finish.

Sizing and fit
The sample can fit children from early walking age through about age six or seven, depending on waist size. Measure the wearer rather than relying on age alone.
The hook-and-loop overlap provides adjustment. For a larger wearer, compare the pattern with the waist measurement and lengthen the waistband section as needed.
