What you’ll make

Sew a roomy, lined toiletry bag with the structured shape and wide opening of a classic doctor’s bag. Short handles make it easy to carry, while the frame holds the bag open.

The zipper-free design can serve as a sewing case, maternity organizer, lunch bag, handbag, pretend doctor’s bag or general-purpose storage case.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Apply fusible stabilizer for structure and body.
  • Join contrasting exterior, base and lining pieces.
  • Sew boxed corners and manage bulky layers.
  • Add fabric or twill-tape handles.
  • Make fabric channels and insert the bag frame.
  • Close the lining by machine or with the invisible stitch tutorial.

Fabric and structure

The demonstrated bag combines exterior, base and lining fabrics with fusible stabilizer. A walking foot helps feed the thicker stabilized layers.

Decovil or batting can replace the demonstrated stabilizer when you want a different degree of firmness or body.

Make it your own

Use one fabric throughout or mix coordinated prints for the exterior, base, lining and frame channels. Make the handles from twill tape or matching fabric.

Add a kraft-tex label, incorporate clear plastic for water resistance or omit the frame for a softer variation.

Finished size

The finished bag measures approximately 37 cm wide by 21 cm high. The documented version uses a frame measuring about 38 cm from end to end.
