What you’ll make
Create a fabric puppet theater that mounts inside a doorway with two adjustable tension rods and folds compactly for storage.
One rod supports the top, while another sits below the stage opening to keep the fabric steady. Gathered curtains close the stage or tie back for a performance.
A large front pocket holds puppets or toys and can be divided into three storage sections.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Finish and hem the large fabric panels.
- Size and sew channels for the tension rods.
- Mark, cut, and finish the stage opening.
- Gather and attach two curtain panels.
- Add a supporting channel below the opening.
- Sew a divided puppet pocket and curtain ties.
Materials and setup
The project uses a large base panel, two curtain panels, a pocket, curtain ties, and fabric channels for two tension rods.
The demonstrated rods are adjustable café-curtain rods. For a thicker shower-style rod, measure its widest end and enlarge the channel so it can pass through.
Make it your own
Add a child’s name or appliqué motifs. Place the pocket on the front or back, and space its dividers to suit the puppets being stored.
You can also adjust the stage opening, curtain fullness, and decorative top panel. Check any changes against the intended doorway and rods before sewing.
