What you’ll make

Make a padded circular play mat that converts into a drawstring toy-storage bag. Spread it flat for play, then place the toys in the center and pull the cord to gather the edge.

The featured version uses a road-print panel and includes small stuffed cars cut from coordinating printed motifs.

What you’ll learn in this class

Mark and cut an even circle from folded fabric.
Join strips into a continuous drawstring channel.
Finish the channel ends and gather its curved edge.
Assemble the batting, backing, channel and top.
Turn and close the mat.
Thread the cord and add a cord lock.
Sew, stuff and hand-finish coordinating toys.

Fabric and materials

You will need top and backing fabrics, batting, cord and a cord lock. Batting adds cushioning and insulation from the floor.

The sample pairs a sturdy printed panel with solid backing fabric. A walking foot helps feed the thick edge, and the instructor uses at least a size 90 needle for the canvas panel.

Make it your own

Choose any imaginative print for the play surface. Personalize the outer side with a name, border or appliqués that remain visible when the bag is closed.

Scale the circle for the space and toys you need to store. Measure its circumference before joining the channel strips, and gather lightly so the strip still reaches around the mat.

Sample size

The sample circle is marked with a 44 cm radius from the folded corner. The same drafting method can be used for another size.
