Duvet Cover + Pillowcase
In today’s class, I’ll show you how to sew a wonderfully original duvet cover in different colors that you can fully customize to make it truly unique. It’s a very easy sewing project, and I’ll explain how to adapt it to any duvet size.

What you’ll make
Sew a coordinated duvet cover and envelope-style pillowcase using solid colors, prints, or a custom mix of both.
The sample duvet has an asymmetric color-blocked front and closes with snaps. The pillowcase has an inner flap that keeps the pillow tucked inside.
The supplied measurements make a standard crib set, and the class explains how to adapt both pieces to other bedding dimensions.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Plan a custom color-block layout for your duvet size.
- Add seam allowance wherever the design is divided.
- Join, finish, and press large cotton panels.
- Create the duvet opening and install snaps.
- Sew an envelope pillowcase with an inner flap.
- Recalculate the covers for other duvet and pillow sizes.
The pieces are large, but the beginner-friendly construction centers on straight seams and clean edge finishes.
Fabric choices
The sample uses lightweight solid cotton. You can work entirely in solids or prints, or combine both.
Finish the cotton edges with a zigzag, overlock-style stitch, or overlocker to prevent fraying inside the covers.
Make it your own
Draft your own divisions across the front and arrange fabric swatches first to check how the colors work together.
For a plain version, cut an undivided front panel. The duvet can close with snaps as shown or with buttonholes and buttons.
Finished sizes
- Duvet cover: 100 × 140 cm.
- Pillowcase: 33 × 55 cm.
