What you’ll make

Sew a lined earflap hat that covers the head and ears in colder weather. The pattern includes sizes for babies, children, and adults.

Chin cords help keep the hat in place. The demonstrated version has a simple knot at each end.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the exterior and lining on the fold.
  • Sew stretch fabric with a suitable needle and stitch.
  • Shape the curved crown smoothly.
  • Enclose and secure the chin cords.
  • Turn the hat and finish the opening.

Fabric options

The sample uses a chunky rib knit outside. For the lining, the instructor suggests fleece, sherpa, or another warm fabric with some stretch.

A sweater knit or wool-look knit can also work outside. Choose a ballpoint, jersey, stretch, or super-stretch needle to suit the fabric.

Make it your own

If you do not have cord, cut narrow ties from the main fabric. Choose any decorative cord-end treatment with the wearer’s age in mind.

For another warm style, try the reversible hat and neck warmer, which combines two fabrics for two wearable sides.

Pattern sizes

The included sizes are 6–12 months, 1–3 years, 4–7 years, 8–12 years, and adult.

The video class includes the downloadable baby, child, and adult earflap-hat PDF pattern.
