What you’ll make

Sew an insulated zippered case for carrying items such as EpiPens, insulin supplies, and related medication accessories.

Thermal batting between the outer fabric and lining helps insulate the contents and adds light cushioning.

The case opens widely and has pockets on both sides, a clear information window, adjustable hook-and-loop straps, and a carabiner attachment tab.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Secure thermal batting between the outer fabric and lining.
  • Bind and divide a mesh pocket.
  • Make an elasticated pocket for bulkier contents.
  • Add an information window, attachment straps, and a carabiner tab.
  • Install the long zipper between the outer fabric and lining.
  • Match the shaped zipper panel to the case sides using notches.
  • Finish the interior edges with binding or overcasting.

Fabric and components

The demonstrated outer fabric is coated waterproof canvas. The samples use nylon or poplin for the lining.

The project also combines thermal batting with mesh, clear plastic, a zipper, and hook-and-loop tape. Bias binding is optional for the interior finish.

Make it your own

Leave the mesh pocket undivided or add a center seam for two sections. Shape the elasticated pocket with gathers or small pleats to suit its contents.

Secure the case to a backpack strap or belt, clip it elsewhere with the carabiner, or add a wrist strap.

Finish the interior seams with bias binding, or simplify them with serging, zigzag stitching, or another neat overcast finish.

Finished dimensions

The finished case measures approximately 24 cm long, 13 cm wide, and just over 6 cm deep.

The class demonstrates the pockets, attachments, zipper construction, and two options for finishing the interior seams. An A4 pattern is included.
