What you’ll make

Sew the Formentera Overalls for babies and young children, choosing either below-the-knee pants or a skirt.

Both versions have a bib, shoulder straps and an elasticized back waist. Buttoned side openings make dressing easier, while a back band helps keep the straps on the shoulders.

Explore the Leo Baby Romper and Summer Overalls.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize the bib, straps and waistband with interfacing.
  • Sew either the pants or skirt version and form the front pleats.
  • Prepare and topstitch optional patch pockets.
  • Assemble the front and back waistbands.
  • Turn and attach the bib and shoulder straps.
  • Insert elastic across the back between the straps.
  • Finish the side openings and add buttons or snaps.

Fabric choices

Lightweight woven fabrics such as poplin, double gauze and summer linen suit the intended warm-weather style.

A knit can also be used, but it creates more drape and requires knit-appropriate sewing choices. Interfacing supports the bib, waistband and closure ends of the straps.

Make it your own

  • Choose the pants or skirt pattern pieces.
  • Shorten the below-the-knee pants if desired.
  • Place pockets on the front or back, or omit them.
  • Use either of the demonstrated pleat treatments.
  • Add the back support band or cross the shoulder straps instead.
  • Use buttons and buttonholes or substitute snaps.
  • Add elastic at the pants hems or leave them plain.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes sizes 6/9, 9/12, 12/18, 18/24 and 24/36 months, followed by 3/4 and 4/5 years.

The chart covers heights of 71–110 cm, chests of 48–57 cm, waists of 47–54 cm and hips of 50–61 cm.

The video class includes both versions in downloadable A4 and A0 pattern files, along with a pattern information sheet.
