What you’ll make
Sew a full circle skirt for a child or adult, with plenty of fullness for movement and twirling. The skirt is cut in one piece and finished with an elastic waistband.
The sample uses woven fabric and pom-pom trim, but the made-to-measure method also works with stretch fabric. You choose the wearer and finished length before drafting.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Use the hip measurement for woven fabric or the waist measurement for stretch fabric.
- Calculate the inner radius and draft a reusable quarter-circle pattern.
- Determine the fabric size needed for your chosen skirt length.
- Cut the full circle from fabric folded into quarters.
- Staystitch the bias-cut waist and finish raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger.
- Make the waistband and insert the elastic without twisting it.
- Calculate the amount of decorative trim needed for the hem.
Choosing fabric and trim
Use woven or stretch fabric. A multidirectional print works especially well because parts of a one-way design will turn upside down around the circle.
The demonstrated waistband uses 3 cm-wide elastic. Pom-pom trim is optional and can be replaced with embroidered ribbon or another suitable trim.
Make it your own
Choose a short, midi, or full-length skirt while drafting. Chiffon, tulle, or another suitable fabric can create a dressier version.
For a coordinated outfit, pair the skirt with the batwing jacket.
