What you’ll make

The Goa is an easy, unlined belt bag with two separate zippered pockets. A smaller pocket is layered over the larger main pocket, providing useful organization without a separate lining.

The featured version uses a braided strap and carabiner-style clasp, but the bag can also be finished with standard bag webbing and a buckle.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Install zippers in the small and large pocket sections.
  • Assemble the pocket layers and turn the corners cleanly.
  • Bind exposed seam allowances for a neat unlined interior.
  • Position and securely topstitch the smaller pocket onto the main pocket.
  • Make the back strap loops and thread an adjustable strap.
  • Adapt the edge finishes for fraying and non-fraying fabrics.

Fabric and structure

Choose a sturdy woven or non-fraying material with some body. The class suggests canvas, denim, faux leather, or softshell.

Interfacing is optional. Add it if you want a firmer bag, choosing its weight to suit the structure of your outer fabric.

Make it your own

  • Finish the interior seams with bias binding or leave them overcast.
  • Use a buckle instead of the featured carabiner-style clasp.
  • Add zipper stops or decorative topstitching.
  • Make the smaller pocket removable with snaps.
  • Combine solid and printed fabrics across the pocket layers.

The class includes an A4 home-print pattern with the pieces needed to sew the Goa belt bag.
