What you’ll make
Create a stuffed hobby horse with a fabric-strip mane, shaped ears, reins and a wooden stick. Add the included horn to turn the same design into a unicorn.
The face can combine stitched features, appliquéd cheeks and button eyes. For a very young child, use embroidered or fabric eyes instead of buttons.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored head pieces and prepare the optional horn.
- Apply fabric cheeks with adhesive and zigzag stitching.
- Sew buttons by machine or create stitched eyes.
- Interface, sew and turn curved ears.
- Position a fabric-strip mane inside the head seam.
- Trim curved seams with pinking shears or small clips.
- Turn, stuff and secure the head around the stick.
Fabric and supplies
Use woven fabric for the head, ears and optional horn, fusible interfacing for the ears and soft stuffing for the head. Fabric strips, yarn or cord can form the mane.
You will also need a wooden stick, fabric glue and trim or cord for the reins. Temporary adhesive or fusible appliqué web can hold the cheeks before stitching.
Make it your own
- Make a horse or add the horn for a unicorn.
- Use fabric strips, yarn or cord for the mane.
- Embroider the eyes, use fabric eyes or add buttons when age-appropriate.
- Change the cheeks, mane length and rein trim.
