Hooded Bath Towel with Ears!

What you’ll make

Sew a hooded bath towel with a soft terry-cloth body, lined hood, and dimensional animal ears. Rounded corners and colorful bias binding create a neat, playful finish.

The hood can end near the forehead or extend farther over the face for imaginative animal play after bath time.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Make appliquéd ears with fusible web and zigzag stitching.
  • Clip curved seams so turned pieces lie smoothly.
  • Construct and line a hood.
  • Finish terry-cloth seams with a serger or zigzag stitch.
  • Bind rounded towel edges with bias tape.
  • Center and secure the hood to the towel body.

Fabric and notions

Use terry cloth for the towel body and hood, soft cotton for the hood lining and ear details, fusible web for the appliqués, and bias tape for the bound edge.

Make it your own

Choose the shorter or longer hood front and adapt the ears to suggest a cat, lion, or another animal. Coordinate the lining, ear details, and bias tape to create a different character.

Bias tape is optional. You can instead finish the perimeter with a serger or zigzag stitch, then turn and topstitch the hem.

Verified measurements

The towel body is a 1.10-meter by 75-centimeter rectangle with rounded corners. The downloadable hood template provides short and long front options.

The class includes a downloadable hood pattern and demonstrates the towel body, dimensional ears, lined hood, and alternative edge finishes.
