What you’ll make
Make a hooded towel poncho for bath time, the beach, or the pool. It slips over a swimsuit and combines an absorbent poncho body with a cozy hood.
A center pocket holds snacks, toys, or beach treasures. Rounded lower corners and bias-bound edges give the poncho a practical finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the body, neckline, pocket, and mirrored hood pieces.
- Round the lower corners with a household template.
- Join and finish fray-prone terry-cloth seams.
- Bind the hood opening and outer edge with bias tape.
- Set the hood evenly into the neckline.
- Prepare and attach the center pocket.
Fabric and sewing choices
The project uses terry cloth and bias tape. The sample combines two terry colors, with a contrasting hood and pocket.
A serger is useful but not required. Straight stitching followed by zigzag or an overcasting stitch can contain the heavily fraying towel edges.
Make it your own
Use one color throughout or contrast the hood and pocket. Choose straight, zigzag, or decorative stitching when attaching the bias tape.
The body can be lengthened and widened for an older child. Check the desired coverage before cutting rather than relying on age alone.
Pattern sizing
The supplied measurements cover ages 2–4 and 4–6. The source notes that adding length and width can adapt the poncho for a child up to about age 10.
