What you’ll make

This focused class shows how to add a gathered shoulder ruffle that sits evenly and stays secure during garment assembly.

The demonstration uses the optional ruffle for the Kids Lisboa dress, but the technique can also add a shoulder detail to T-shirts, blouses, dresses, or jumpsuits.

You’ll see the ruffle prepared and attached to a sample sleeve, showing how the notches, gathers, and shoulder position work together.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the ruffle with its pattern markings intact.
  • Choose a suitable finish for the outer edge.
  • Sew and draw up a long gathering row.
  • Match the center and outer notches to the sleeve.
  • Distribute the gathers evenly between the marked points.
  • Secure the ruffle for the next stage of assembly.

Edge finishes for knit fabric

The pattern allows for a one-centimeter hem. The demonstrated finish folds the edge inward twice, using a half-centimeter fold each time.

For knit fabric, the class also discusses leaving the edge raw or finishing it with a baby lock or colorful overlock stitch.

Make it your own

Use the ruffle as an exposed accent or enclose it between garment layers. Choose a matching edge finish or make the stitching a decorative feature.

If your finish uses less than the included hem allowance, the class explains how to adjust the outer corner before cutting.

The video provides a focused demonstration of preparing, gathering, positioning, and securing the shoulder ruffle. An A4 ruffle pattern for the Kids Lisboa dress is included.
