Install a two-part metal jeans button so it sits straight and firmly on your project. This focused mini class covers the button and locking post used for classic denim-style closures.

Jeans buttons work well on pants and jackets, but they can also add a sturdy detail to backpacks and other accessories. The technique is suitable for functional closures or decorative accents.

What you’ll learn in this class

Learn how to position and set a jeans button while protecting both your hands and the fabric. You’ll see the essential tools and the key checks that help the two parts align correctly.

Identify the button and locking post.
Mark the exact button position.
Pierce the fabric cleanly with an awl.
Align the post with the button opening.
Set the button carefully with a hammer.
Use pliers to keep fingers clear of the strike.
Avoid damaging the fabric during installation.

If the button will pass through a buttonhole, make the buttonhole first. Because the post locks into the button, check the placement and alignment before setting it.
