What you’ll make

Create a quilted fabric panel, trimmed and ready to become part of a sewing project.

The method can add body, texture and stitched decoration to toiletry bags, backpacks, handbags, small accessories or more structured garments.

What you’ll learn in this class

Choose batting for the loft, softness or structure you want.
Cut fabric and batting oversize to allow for shrinkage during quilting.
Plan a design around the pattern outline and seam allowance.
Control the result through the direction and spacing of the stitching.
Hold the layers with spray adhesive, pins or quilting safety pins.
Use a walking foot and guide bar to feed layers and space parallel lines.
Stitch the finished outline and trim the panel accurately.

Preparing the layers

Batting varies from soft and lofty to compact and firm, so choose it for the result you want.

Temporary or permanent spray adhesive can hold the layers together. Test it on a scrap first, especially with delicate fabric, or use pins or curved quilting safety pins.

Make it your own

Quilt straight or diagonal lines, or draw your own motif with a removable fabric marker. A guide bar can repeat straight lines without marking each one.

Closer stitching produces a firmer panel. Wider spacing preserves more loft, although the final effect also depends on the batting.
