What you’ll make

Sew the Hugo, a children’s collared polo shirt with a front placket and a choice of short sleeves or long sleeves finished with stretch cuffs.

The poplin sample has the crisp character of a casual shirt. A polo-style knit gives the design a softer, more traditional polo look.

What you’ll learn in this class

Prepare and sew the overlapping front plackets.
Use lightweight interfacing to support selected areas.
Join the shoulders and attach the sleeves using the notches.
Make and evenly distribute stretch cuffs.
Attach the collar and enclose the neckline seam.
Hem the shirt and choose a placket finish.

Fabric choices

The sample is made in cotton poplin, but a polo knit or another suitable knit can also be used. The fabric determines whether the finished garment feels more like a shirt or a classic polo.

For the long-sleeve version, use rib knit or cuff fabric at the wrists. You can also extend the sleeves and hem them instead of adding cuffs.

Lightweight interfacing adds body where needed. On fine fabric, support at least one placket layer before sewing buttonholes.

Make it your own

Choose short sleeves for warmer weather or long sleeves with cuffs for cooler days. The placket may remain open or be finished with buttons, plastic snaps, or metal snaps.

Adjust the amount of interfacing to make the collar and placket softer or more structured for your chosen fabric.

Pattern sizing

Seven sizes run from 18/24 months through 12/13 years. The chart covers heights of 86–152 cm and chest measurements of 52–79 cm.

The video class comes with a tiled A4 pattern, an A0 copy-shop pattern, and a project information file.
