What you’ll make
Sew the Izzie, a short summer dress with a wide round neckline and circular ruffles framing the armholes.
The dress is designed for a lightweight woven fabric with drape. Because the fabric has no stretch, a small back opening and button allow the neckline to pass over the head.
The sample is short and breezy, while the romantic ruffles can be styled casually or dressed up with different accessories.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the dress and prepare bias-cut binding strips.
- Draft circular ruffles for the selected size.
- Staystitch bias and curved edges.
- Finish curved ruffle edges and the dress hem.
- Bind the back opening and neckline.
- Form a button loop and insert the armhole ruffles.
Fabric and drape
Choose a lightweight, non-stretch woven fabric with fluid drape and movement. Viscose, crepe and satin are the examples given for this design.
Fine fabrics can distort along bias-cut necklines and armholes, so the class demonstrates staystitching and careful handling before assembly.
Make it your own
Adjust the depth of the circular ruffle, or draft different widths for a layered effect. Remember to retain the needed seam and hem allowances.
Lengthen the dress and add pockets using the long summer dress as a reference.
