What you’ll make

The Jaén Pants combine wide, flared legs with side pockets and a broad elastic waistband for a flowing silhouette.

Parallel rows of topstitching add detail to the waistband. Optional buttonholes hold a decorative tie made from the main fabric.

The full-length version falls below the ankle. The class sample is shortened, with the final length checked on the body before hemming.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare, stabilize, and cut fine, fluid fabric while limiting distortion.
  • Sew the side pockets and keep their openings flat.
  • Assemble the pants using the pattern notches.
  • Construct, insert elastic into, and evenly topstitch the waistband.
  • Choose a finished length and sew the hem.
  • Make and thread the optional self-fabric tie.

Choosing fabric

Choose a woven fabric with fluid drape. Crepe, viscose, polyester, and satin are suggested for a light version; a heavier fabric can work if it still has movement.

The sample uses vintage crepe. For slippery fabric, the class covers stabilizing it before cutting and testing a suitable presser foot and needle.

Make it your own

Keep the below-ankle length or shorten the legs after a fitting, allowing enough fabric for the hem.

The tie is decorative because the internal elastic provides the fit. Make it from matching fabric, replace it with a coordinating cord, or omit the tie and buttonholes.

Sizing and pattern formats

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56.

It is supplied in A4 and A0 formats, along with a pattern information sheet.

The video class covers fabric preparation, pockets, pants assembly, the elastic waistband, fitting the length, hemming, and the optional tie.
