What you’ll make
Sew the Jim, a men’s hooded jacket with a full front zipper, two zippered side pockets and adjustable hook-and-loop tabs at the cuffs.
The demonstrated softshell version has a waterproof outer face and warm fleece on the reverse. A large hood completes this practical cold-weather layer.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare softshell or adapt the seam finish for fraying or knit fabric.
- Create clean zippered pocket openings and attach the pocket bags.
- Align and baste the front zipper before adding the facings.
- Construct the hood and finish its front edge.
- Attach the hood, neckline facing and front facings.
- Sew sleeves, cuff tabs and hook-and-loop fasteners in the correct orientation.
- Finish the cuffs, hem and jacket edges neatly.
Fabric options
The class uses softshell, which combines a waterproof outer face with fleece on the reverse. Unlike fraying fabric, its cut edges do not require overcasting.
Sweatshirt fabric is another supported option. Use a stretch stitch, overlock stitch or serger for knit fabric, and finish the edges of woven fabric that frays.
Make it your own
Add eyelets and a drawcord to the hood, the hem or both for adjustable openings. These additions are optional and discussed in the class.
The cuff tabs can also be omitted if you prefer a plain sleeve opening.
Sizing and fit
The pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans chest measurements of 82–130 cm, waists of 66–114 cm and hips of 78–126 cm.
Finished jacket length ranges from 73 cm in size 34/36 to 78 cm in size 54/56. Use the measurement chart to choose your size before cutting.
The video class comes with A4 and A0 pattern files, plus a PDF containing the measurement chart and essential project information.
