What you’ll make
Joan is a slim, lined backpack that sits close to the body and carries essentials without the bulk of a conventional pack. Its narrow profile can even fit beneath a roomy jacket.
The interior includes a laptop section, divided slip pockets, and zippered storage. Adjustable webbing extends the shaped straps, while 3D mesh on the sample’s back and strap panels adds breathability.

Exterior, lining and support
The sample combines two-tone denim canvas with 3D mesh on the back and inner strap panels. Printed cotton poplin forms the lining, while backpack webbing and continuous zippers add functional detail.
You can use sturdy canvas throughout the exterior. Lightweight poplin is not recommended outside because the backpack needs a more durable fabric for regular handling and contact with the ground.
Interfacing supports the front and base in the sample. Padding can add cushioning, but very firm or thick support may make the curved assembly and final turning more difficult.
Make it your own
The interior layout is flexible. Keep the laptop, slip, and zipper sections as shown, change their divisions, move the zipper pocket, or omit selected compartments to suit what you carry.
The straps can be topstitched or quilted in a pattern of your choice. If firm support makes turning difficult, the class suggests binding the interior seams instead.
Using 3D mesh creates a cushioned, breathable back. Using the outer canvas instead gives a more uniform look, with optional padding or interfacing for added structure.
Finished size
The finished backpack measures approximately 34.5 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep.
