Karen Backpack / Bag
In this class, I’ll show you how to sew a practical, multipurpose backpack that’s very easy to make and incredibly useful. The PDF includes two sizes and a materials list!

What you’ll make
The Karen is a lined drawstring backpack for children or adults. Its drawcord closes the top and forms the carrying straps.
A zippered pocket spans the front, with a smaller pocket inside it for separating small essentials.
Use it as a snack bag, daycare bag, change-of-clothes bag or simple everyday backpack.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Interface selected pieces without making the pocket too stiff.
- Install and topstitch a zipper.
- Add an organizing pocket inside the front pocket.
- Join the exterior and lining for a clean finish.
- Sew the upper drawstring casing.
- Shape the lower corners and set eyelets.
- Thread two cords to form the closure and straps.
Fabric and supplies
The samples use poplin for the exterior and lining. The project also calls for interfacing, one zipper, drawcord and two eyelets.
Decorative cord ends are optional; secure knots also work.
Make it your own
- Use webbing instead of cord.
- Position the inner pocket higher or lower.
- Use straight, zigzag or decorative stitching on the pocket.
- Make the smaller bag for an adult with the adult drawcord length.
Finished sizes
- Small: approximately 30 cm high × 25 cm wide.
- Larger: approximately 45 cm high × 35 cm wide.
