What you’ll make
Sew a children’s two-piece swimsuit with bikini briefs and a top. The featured version adds ruffles to both pieces and long straps that tie at the shoulders.
The briefs have a front lining, and the class discusses adding more lining where desired.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Set up a regular sewing machine for swimwear Lycra.
- Test needles and stitches to address skipped stitches.
- Join Lycra and lining with flexible seams.
- Prepare narrow straps and finish their ends.
- Distribute ruffles and elastic evenly around openings.
- Turn and topstitch elastic edges with flexible stitching.
Swimwear materials
Use swimwear Lycra and rubber or clear swimwear elastic. This specialized elastic withstands sun and chlorine better than ordinary elastic.
A Stretch, Super Stretch, or Stretch Chrome needle is recommended. A Teflon foot may help with feeding; painter’s or washi tape beneath a universal foot is another option shown.
Make it your own
Add ruffles to both pieces, only the top, only the briefs, or neither. Omitting them makes the project easier.
The top can be strapless, tied at each shoulder, or made with front straps that tie behind the neck. Check the placement on the child before securing the straps.
