What you’ll make
Sew a children’s briefcase-style backpack with a wide rectangular body, two front buckle closures, adjustable shoulder straps, and a top hanging loop.
A clear name-card window on the back keeps identification easy to find without displaying it prominently on the front.
The compact backpack is intended for daycare or preschool essentials such as a snack, notebook, and pencil case.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose a non-fraying fabric for exposed interior seams.
- Double lightweight fabric to give the bag more body.
- Topstitch faux leather without leaving pinholes.
- Sew a clear name-card window with an open edge.
- Prepare buckle tabs, a hanging loop, and a reinforced strap panel.
- Thread adjustable straps through sliders and rings.
- Box the lower corners to create depth.
Fabric and materials
The sample uses soft faux leather. Because it is lightweight, the main pieces are doubled for more body. One layer may be enough with a thicker, firmer faux leather.
Neoprene or waterproof fabric can also work if it does not fray. The interior seam allowances remain exposed, so fabric that sheds threads is unsuitable.
Clips and soluble glue hold the pieces without permanent pinholes. A walking foot helps feed the layered, slightly slippery material.
Make it your own
Move the clear name window to another spot on the back or leave it off. If you include it, keep the top or one side open so the card can be changed.
Adjust the shoulder straps for the child who will carry the bag. Reinforce the upper panel and strap attachment points with repeated stitching as shown.

Finished measurements
The finished backpack measures approximately 21 cm high by 34 cm wide by 10 cm deep.
