What you’ll make
Sew close-fitting kids’ briefs in jersey knit, finished with elastic at the waist and leg openings. The shaped center front is lined for a clean, comfortable interior.
The small pattern pieces make this a useful project for knit remnants, especially in the younger sizes. For another style, try the boxer shorts tutorial.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose a stretch or jersey needle and suitable knit stitches.
- Align the mirrored front sides with the lined center panel.
- Enclose the front and crotch seams neatly.
- Quarter the elastic and openings for even stretch.
- Attach the elastic with a zigzag, stretch stitch or serger.
- Turn the elastic inside and secure a flat, even edge.
Fabric and elastic
Use jersey knit for the briefs and elastic for the waist and legs. Small knit remnants may be sufficient for the younger sizes.
A stretch or jersey needle is recommended. The class covers construction with a standard sewing machine and discusses serger options for the knit seams and elastic.
