What you’ll make

Sew a lined children’s rain poncho with a three-panel hood, front zipper, and protective chin guard.

An inverted pleat adds room at the back, which is cut longer to help cover a child’s school backpack.

What you’ll learn in this class

Organize the mirrored outer, lining, and facing pieces.
Construct the outer and lined hoods around a center panel.
Sew the center back and form the inverted pleat in both layers.
Install the zipper and make the protective chin guard.
Join the poncho and lining, turn them, and topstitch the edges.
Test needles, thread, tension, and stitch length on waterproof fabric.

Fabric and waterproofing

The sample pairs waterproof outer fabric with a poplin lining. Clips can hold the coated layers without piercing them repeatedly.

A walking foot can help feed bulky or slightly sticky layers. Test the needle, thread, tension, and stitch length on a scrap because every fabric and machine behaves differently.

For greater rain protection, the seams can be sealed with specialist iron-on waterproof seam tape.

Make it your own

The class briefly explains how to replace the zipper with snaps, although this variation is not sewn in full.

Optional snaps or short rows of stitching can create loose arm openings.

With nondirectional fabric, the center back and its facing may be cut on the fold after removing the center seam allowance.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes sizes 2/3 through 14/15 for heights of 95–170 cm and chest measurements of 50–86 cm.
