What you’ll make

Create a children’s hooded onesie that can be worn as cozy pajamas or developed into an animal or character costume.

The design includes a snap front, wrist and ankle cuffs, side-seam pockets and a hood. Optional ears, a tail and a contrast belly panel add character.

What you’ll learn in these classes

  • Sew shaped ears into the paneled hood.
  • Add the optional contrast belly panels.
  • Construct side-seam pockets.
  • Finish bulky or stretchy fabric edges.
  • Attach wrist and ankle cuffs evenly.
  • Join the hood and finish the front opening.
  • Position and install the front snaps.

Fabric choices

The sample uses warm coral fleece. Other options include short- or long-pile fleece, other knit fabrics and even woven fabric, depending on the intended use.

Rib knit is used for the wrist and ankle cuffs. When working with pile fabric, cut every piece with the nap running in the same direction.

Make it your own

Keep the ears, change their shape or leave them off. Add a tail or another character detail, vary the snap placement or use contrasting fabric for the belly.

A separate class shows how to combine the front and belly pattern sections into one continuous piece when you want to use the same fabric throughout.

You can also replace the rib cuffs with elasticated hems, allowing for the necessary change in sleeve and leg length.

Sizes and fit

The pattern covers size groups 2/3 through 14/15, for heights from 95–105 cm to 158–170 cm.

The size chart provides chest, waist and hip measurements to help you select the pattern size.

The project includes two video classes, A4 and A0 pattern files and an information file with the size chart.
