What you’ll make
Make wide-leg palazzo pants for children with an above-the-ankle length, shaped front waist darts, a wide elastic waistband, and an optional fabric tie.
The relaxed legs and elastic waist allow comfortable movement. The darts and tie add a neat finish that works with casual or dressier fabrics.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Transfer the notches and sew the front waist darts.
- Make and turn an optional fabric tie.
- Join mirrored front and back pieces into complete legs.
- Sew the inseams and crotch curve while matching seams.
- Distribute and attach wide elastic evenly at the waist.
- Finish edges with a serger, zigzag, or overcasting stitch.
Fabric guidance
Choose fabric that is not stiff and has a little stretch. The class also explains how to select a suitable needle when the fabric contains elastane.
Make it your own
Leave off the tie for a simpler finish, make it in contrasting fabric, or replace it with decorative ribbon or trim.
The pattern finishes above the ankle. Extend the legs for full-length pants or shorten them into Bermuda shorts, checking the desired length on the child before hemming.

The pattern covers children’s sizes 4–5 years through 12–13 years.
